Auto Body Technology

Through the magic of auto body technology, technicians take a heap of metal and return it to its former status. More specifically, auto body technicians evaluate collision damage and perform body repair on vehicles in compliance with factory and dealership specifications.

At the onset of every job, auto body technicians analyze the damage and work with an estimator to determine the cost of repair. Then it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty work of auto body technology, which includes: straightening bent bodies, removing dents, and replacing irreparably damaged parts; pulling or knocking out less serious dents, pits, and dimples; refinishing metal using tools such as metal cutting guns, hydraulic jacks, small pneumatic hammers, and punches; and repairing or replacing plastic body parts.

Obviously, training in auto body technology is critical to success in the industry. Auto body technicians need a solid knowledge base of the functions required in repairing damaged body parts and vehicle bodies. They must also be well-versed in vendor products and catalogs.

But auto body technicians need a strong general education background as well. Math skills help technicians measure and dimension. Science knowledge comes into play when mixing paints, thinners, and reducers. Physics is a factor in adjusting pressures and fluid flow to apply paint with low-volume, low-pressure guns. And of course, good communication is essential in relationships with customers and colleagues alike.

Can you see beyond what something is to what it can be? Put your talent to work with training in auto body technology.
