Facts About Refrigeration Air Conditioning in America:

The average American household uses about as much electricity for refrigeration air conditioning (12 percent of total consumption) as it does for space heating (11 percent of total consumption).

83 percent of the electricity used for refrigeration air conditioning is used to operate central air-conditioning systems.

Nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of all American households have air-conditioners. 47 percent of all households have central air-conditioning systems and 25 percent have window/wall air conditioners. 1 percent have both central and window/wall air conditioners.

American households with electric air conditioning spend an average of $140, and 40 percent use their air conditioners all summer long. Of all U.S. households, 30 percent have air conditioners and use them all summer.

Households in the South spend the most for refrigeration air conditioning, an average of $201, while households in the Midwest spend the least, an average of $81. In the South, 57 percent of all households have electric air conditioners and use them all summer, compared to just 11 percent of the households in the Northeast and West.
