Marine technicians today need to know about the complex systems of many different engines, such as the Honda outboard, Yamaha four-stroke, and Cummins MerCruiser diesel, to name a few.
A marine mechanics program will give you the skills you need to become a successful marine technician. You'll learn the ins and outs of outboard engines, stern drive engines, two- and four-stroke engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, hull design, trim, and tilt. You'll learn how to use specialized diagnostic, maintenance, and repair equipment.
Once you've been schooled in the basics of marine mechanics, you'll take manufacturer-sponsored courses, including Marine Honda, Marine Suzuki, Marine Volvo Penta, Marine Yamaha, and Mercury MercTech. You'll work on lots of different engines and you'll learn how marine dealerships work.
After you complete your marine mechanics training, you're on your way to becoming certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). To become ASE certified as a marine technician, you are required to have two years of work experience and pass ASE certification exams. A formal marine mechanics training program typically counts as one year of work experience, and the curriculum helps prepare you to take the ASE exams.
